Our Short History of Lewes

Lewes is located on the River Ouse which was a very important transit link in days gone by. These days people of Lewes mostly use good bus service with nearby Brighton and trains to London or Gatwick.

There is archeologic evidence that a Roman Settlement was here. Lewes Castle was built in 1069 by William de Warenne, 1st Earl of Surrey. During the Anglo-Saxon period the town became a port with docks along the River Ouse.

Through the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, Lewes developed as the county town of East Sussex, expanding beyond the line of the town wall. It was an active port and iron, brewing, and ship building industries were quickly growing and developing. In 1846 the town became an important railway junction.

These days Lewes is very popular town for the tourist. It has historical architecture, it’s close to Brighton and South Downs National Park. There is a fantastic variety of restaurants, cafes, pubs, hotels and B&B, something to suit everyone.

The town's most important annual event is theLewes Bonfire celebrations on 5 November. This event not only marks the date of the failed Gunpowder Plot in 1605, but also reminding us of the seventeen Protestant martyrs burnt at the stake for their faith during the Marian Persecutions. The celebrations are the largest and most famous bonfire night celebrations in the country. Attracting people from far and wide to see this spectacular event every year.
